We at Frames Contemporary Gallery are very excited to be giving Jane Cruickshank her first solo show for 5 years. Jane has been working in the gallery for eighteen months or so and has still been able to put together this exhibition. We first saw her work at her degree show at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen in 1999 and left a note for her to get in touch with the gallery. It took five years for her to do this but we are delighted that she got round to it in the end. Jane is a truly talented artist whose work is immediately accessible due to her ability to paint so realistically. But at the same time there is more depth to her work than just mere representation. She says, “ I started painting the figure while at Art College. Mainly self-portraits or members of the family usually on large canvases with the figure placed off centre to create an image of vulnerability. Pattern and surface is a tool that I use to explore how the dominance of appearance manipulates the identity”
