Lucy Campbell 2006

Lucy was born in Perth and was educated at Glenalmond College where she showed an outstanding talent within the art department. However, she went on to study sociology at Sussex University, graduating in 1999. During this time she continued to paint for herself as well as in community projects and workshops but felt she needed more time and space to develop her art and in 2002 she moved to Spain. It was there that she started work on a series of paintings exploring the secret life of Molly. The adventures of this alter ego have been illustrated through many of these works, which explore the fantastical and exotic world which is hidden from so many of us. Having had four solo exhibitions in Barcelona, this is the first time that a UK audience has had an opportunity to see a large collection of her work.
Her work is of a style that is open to interpretation on many levels but she has used this quotation from the poem entitled, “At the Gates of the City of the Storyteller God,” by Clarissa Pinkola Estés to give some insight to her work.

“. . . Whenever a fairy tale is told, it becomes night. No matter where the dwelling, no matter the time, no matter the season, the telling of tales causes a starry sky and a white moon to creep from the eaves and hover over the heads of the listeners. Sometimes, by the end of the tale, the chamber is filled with daybreak, other times a starry shard is left behind, sometimes a ragged thread of storm sky. And whatever is left if the bounty to work with, to use toward the soul-making . . .”
