Born in the South of England, Jude has lived in North East Scotland for more than 20 years. After studying art history, and spending many years writing books about other people’s art, she eventually came to focus on making her own. Inspired by the Scottish landscape and by the Colourist tradition in Scottish painting, she works mainly in her garden studio, on a hill overlooking Findhorn Bay and the Moray Firth.
She is not concerned with making naturalistic images. In her landscapes, she ties to evoke the feel of a place, or a moment in that place. As well as painting her immediate surroundings, She does get out and about searching for motifs, although she usually returns to the studio to complete each painting. Incorporating recognisable landmarks, from lighthouses to distilleries, castles and churches, she create images that are both expressive and decorative.
