sandy murphy solo 2017

We are delighted to be holding our first solo exhibition of work by Sandy Murphy at the gallery. Since graduating with an honours degree in Fine Art from Glasgow School of Art in 1980, Murphy has established himself firmly in the contemporary Scottish art scene; exhibiting prolifically across the U.K. and winning several awards over the years, he is well-renowned as a painter of passion, whose distinctive style follows in the great Scottish tradition of painting yet remains entirely his own.

Under the tutelage of Jimmy Robertson and Duncan Shanks, Murphy set out on a strong path, developing a masterful skill in handling composition and colour. The marks on the canvas are arrived at through a process of alchemy which would be hard to reproduce. The paintings are worked into, scraped down and repainted, but the end result is always poetic. This, combined with the exquisite placing of object and line, allows them to take on timeless aspect. The viewer can revisit the piece time and time again and never fail to delight in their manifest beauty and intrigue.
