Jessica Oliver
Artist Statement
Jessica Oliver’s practice is rooted in a deep engagement with the landscape — an ongoing investigation into how memory, place, and experience intertwine. Her work begins through immersion in an environment: sketchbook studies and observational drawings form the starting point for a more intuitive, studio-based process of discovery.
Released from direct representation, Oliver explores the essence of place through a considered use of light, colour, and tone. Her paintings aim to capture the emotional resonance of remembered landscapes, translating the subtleties of experience into abstracted forms. Drawn marks and layered surfaces add depth and movement, reflecting both the complexity of memory and the ever-shifting character of the natural world.
Biography
Originally from the North East of England, Jessica Oliver completed her Foundation Course and BA (Hons) in History of Art before moving to London, where she lived until relocating to Edinburgh in 1995.
After taking time out to raise her family, she reconnected with her artistic practice in 2012, joining Leith School of Art — first as a part-time student and later as part of the Specialised Landscape Course. This period of renewed focus marked the beginning of a sustained exploration into her visual language and her deepening relationship with landscape painting.
Now based in Edinburgh, Oliver continues to develop her work through studio practice and exhibition, creating paintings that evoke the quiet power of place and the persistence of memory.
