Although these paintings are extremely carefully thought through and arranged, they are really an explosion of joy and love of the natural world around us.
I have been working with water-based oil paint on paintings celebrating locally grown vegetables, flowers and trees for a number of years and this exhibition is about 6 months of my own garden which has a history of at least 300 years.
I work from direct observation and have been influenced particularly by Renaissance altarpiece painting and Japanese perception. It has been fascinating to see how the organic shapes have been affected by the strict structures and different colours of the backgrounds, all of which have been lurking around the studio waiting to be painted on. Hence the idea of painting the paintings!
